Colour theory - Hue, Value, Chroma

  • Hue: The value of the colour in respect to the colour wheel. Red, orange, and yellow hues are generally perceived as warmer colours, while green, blue, and violet hues are perceived as cooler colours. When warm and cool colours are put together in a composition, the warmer colours tend to move forward while the cooler colours recede further into the image.
  • Value (lightness): The lightness or darkness of a respective hue value. This involves adding either white (tint) or black (shade) to a hue to give the hue a different appearance.
  • Chroma (saturation): The intensity of a hue value, where a hue with a higher chroma value will appear to be more vibrant and energetic, while a hue with a lower chroma value will appear to be dull, murky, and uninviting.
